Thank you Poland for having us here, and thank you for taking the lead in supporting Ukraine.\n \nFirstly, the Norwegian delegation strongly condemns the Russian aggression and the war in Ukraine. Norway stands with Ukraine! \n \nBut we also condemn Putins aggression to the Russians right to speak freely. \n \nIn Birmingham we arranged a side-event on political prisoners. A main concern was the situation in Russia and Belarus. \n\nI’m delighted that this issue was broadly reflected in the Birmingham Declaration. I look forward to supporting Congressman Cohen’s work as Special Representative on political prisoners. \n \nWe all know that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of political prisoners. People put in prison for simply speaking out – as we are doing here, to day. \n \nNow, award-winning political prisoner in Russia, Vladimir Kara-Murza, is facing new charges. He was arrested in April 2022 on charges of disobeying police orders. However, new charges have been added to these, including treason. This could lead to more than 20 years in prison. \n\nBut I am encouraged that the Council of Europe recently awarded him the Vaclav Havel human rights prize. The demand for the unconditional release of political prisoners is fundamental to democracy. We can as Members of Parliaments write letters to Vladimir Kara-Murza and others political prisoners and tell them what we are doing. \n \nFinally, I would like to say that the Nobel Peace Prize winners for 2022, Ales Bialiatski and the two NGOs, Memorial and the Center for Civil Liberties, are three outstanding champions of human rights, democracy and peaceful co-existence in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.\n\nMy speech today:\nOSCE Parliamentary Assembly
